If someone had told West Burlington High School girls basketball coach John Vandenberg that senior Annaka Harris would be held scoreless and the Falcons would still beat Class 1A's 14th-ranked Notre Dame, he likely wouldn't have believed it. The Falcons jumped out to a point lead after one quarter and never looked back, cruising to a SEI Superconference South Division victory over the Nikes.
Harris may not have scored a single point, but she spearheaded the West Burlington defense which proved to be a brick wall for the Nikes. But I think with the defense I played and thinking about the team and getting them points, I think I did pretty good tonight.
And then we also had to stop inside because they have good players that play inside. I thought we did a good job of keeping bodies on girls tonight. West Burlington overall, South Division took care of business from the opening tip as Natalie Vandenberg came up with a steal which led to a basket by senior Leah Collier. West Burlington sophomore guard Abbey Bence had a banner night, scoring 12 of her 17 points in the first half as the Falcons blew out to a lead. And Bence did her part on the defensive end as the Falcons did not allow a single Notre Dame player to reach double figures in scoring.
Everybody played really well and it seemed like we got our hands in the passing lanes," Bence said. They look up the floor and when I run ahead they give me good passes. I can get myself open, but I have to rely on other people to make passes. Sometimes we break her down mentally and we have to build her back up. West Burlington senior Sydney Marlow scored a game-high 23 points, while fellow senior Leah Collier chipped in with 12 points.
But it was the Falcons' defense which won the game. West Burlington held the Nikes to just 22 precent shooting on the night and single-digit scoring in three of the four quarters. That was a big priority of ours tonight. Being able to do that was encouraging, for sure," Bence said. But once we got going we took that really big lead and I was super proud of my team for playing together and not being selfish. We had Sydney doing this. Now Natalie can pick it up. Leah can pick it up. Abbey can pick it up. We can bring in Logan Kelley.
We can bring in McKenna Marlow. We have more things now. Totals: Totals : Fouls: Notre Dame 17, West Burlington 9. Fouled out: None. Technicals: None.
